After her very successful first plunge into playwriting with last year’s ‘Marion’, Katie is back with a new text ‘Sharon’!

“There’ll be no hanky panky under my roof.  That’s what the back seat of a Toyota was invented for, Sharon”

After a decade of living it up and haven’ the craic, Sharon’s mother asks her to return to her hometown.  She works in a bar, hangs out with the local drama group and begins to feel cornered into following everyone else’s footsteps i.e. get married, buy house, have baby.  Repeat final step until dead.  This is the backwards love story of a girl who figures out what she wants just as she realises what she has.

Come along to the TDC this Friday, February 10th to hear a rehearsed reading of the text and give valuable feedback to Katie on her new play set to open at Cork Midsummer Festival later this year.

On Wednesday October 12th, Margaret Pikes will be giving a talk entitled ‘Owning our Voices: Vocal Discovery in the Wolfsohn-Hart Tradition.

Margaret is a founding member of the Roy Hart Theatre. She trained with Roy Hart and began working with him when she was still at University studying for her BA in Philosophy and Sociology, later also obtaining a PGCE. She has been a teacher of the Roy Hart approach to vocal expression internationally for more than 40 years. She was voice teacher at the Conservatories (Dramatic Art) of Liege and Brussels; has been a voice coach for among others – the Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre company; the award winning Kindle Theatre (Birmingham); blueCinque (Turin) and Theaterlabor (Bielefeld). As a performer Margaret participated in many of the Roy Hart Theatre’s experimental performances including ‘the Bacchae’, ‘And’, ‘The Tempest’ and ‘Musiques pour Marsyas’. She then developed her career as a professional singer of many genres from jazz to chanson française, including with Michèle Bernard in ‘des Nuits Noires de Monde’ (France). She was the soloist in the oratorio ‘Canto General’ (Mikis Theodorakis and Pablo Neruda), singing with many different directors and choirs in France and sang for the Premier of this work in the USA. She devised and toured several one-woman shows of French songs and sketches. In the 1990’s Margaret lived and worked for 6 years in Togo, West Africa, where she sang with the jazz trio Anima and with singer Joe Coo. From 2010 – 2012 she performed in England and at the Edinburgh Festival, in ‘Agnes and Walter: A Little Love Story’, with the Dance Theatre Company SMITH.

As a visiting research fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University, Margaret is a currently writing a book about how she has developed her voice work in the Wolfsohn-Hart tradition.

Margaret is based in Cologne, Germany and also teaches in the UK, and in France.
